Linda Zillmer states a plea for Sawyer County to partner in hosting the Land Stewardship conference. Johnson asks what it costs and how it is done. At this point it requires cooperation from a representative in our county. Berard has more information and explanation, stating the cost is nominal. Currently the counties involved are Price and Taylor. Discussion. Johnson moves that we put it on the agenda for next month. Chair Pearson asks to have more information available at that time.
Sawyer County Ag. Fair Association
Chuck Aubart reported. Aubart updated new committee members that the dates for the 2010 Fair are August 19-22nd and reviewed the Fair process. There are more requests coming in for use of Fairgrounds. The Ag/Ext Committee would like to promote use of the Fairgrounds for more than a four day Fair; it needs to start generating dollars and should be an enhancement to the community. The Fair Board agrees and is working toward that goal. Aubart reports that a Christian Motorcycle group will be there at the end of the month, and other upcoming events are the Dairy Breakfast and the Habitat for Humanity garage sale.
Agent Report – Lori Laberee, 4-H Youth Agent
Laberee has information applicable to all Ag and Extension Committee members. She will wait until next month when all new members are present to provide information on the overall UW-Extension office Program Areas.
There was discussion regarding the newspaper article on Town Hall meetings that have been held on critical topics. The event was sponsored by Lac Courte Oreilles-Sawyer County Prevention Programming Coalition. Laberee partnered with community agencies to organize and plan the event. She could not personally attend the event as she had knee replacement surgery less than a week prior to meeting. Several 4-H adult volunteers and a 4-H youth participated in the county event. Berard facilitated the strategic planning for the coalition, helping them set their multi year goals. Pearson feels that follow-up is crucial; continual follow-up. Citizen Zillmer commends the effort that Sawyer County 4-H is putting forth; other counties are role modeling their process.
Bob Swenson, Archery Leader, is working with Forestry Department on gating the 4-H property next week. 4-H property is located in Meteor and Weigor townships and includes approximately 120 acres of wooded land.
170 youth enrolled in 4-H at this time – anticipate 180 which is right on target with our county average for the past five years. Laberee reviewed mini-grants that have been obtained and what the youth are doing with the money received.
Sawyer County UW Extension office will undergo a State Civil Rights audit on June 8th. A team of people will be coming from the state to review Program outreach efforts and discuss opportunities for expansion.
