Public Safety Meeting – November 5, 2010 – 8:30 a.m.

Chairman Zietlow called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.
Motion by Zietlow, seconded by Maki, to approve the revised agenda as presented. Motion carried.
Motion by Maki, seconded by Pearson, to approve the minutes of the October 12, 2010, meeting. Motion carried.
Sheriff Meier presented the monthly department report.
Sheriff Meier informed the committee that $22,022.00 was received for the sale of four squad cars through auction and $7,500.00 was received from another department for the purchase of a used squad car.
Chief Deputy Kornbroke informed the committee that Ewald Automotive will reduce the cost for the purchase of squad cars by $500.00 each if the cars are ordered by November 12, 2010. The total cost for the five cars would be $108,000.00, which is under the $115,000.00 budgeted for in the 2011 budget. The cars will not be delivered until 2011. Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to approve Chief Deputy Kornbroke ordering the squad cars from Ewald Automotive prior to November 12, 2010. Motion carried.
Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to approve out of county travel for the sheriff’s department as presented. Motion carried
Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to approve the sheriff’s department vouchers as presented. Motion carried.
Lt. Barthel presented the monthly jail report to the committee. Lt. Barthel informed the committee of the integration of the canteen and phone card system, which will benefit the jail. Lt. Barthel informed the committee that the TRIP system (Tax Refund Intercept Program) has been updated and will be in effect for tax refunds received by inmates.
Animal Control Officer Shelton presented her monthly report to the committee.
Animal Control Officer Shelton informed the committee that she currently receives reimbursed insurance from the county, as she has health insurance through her husband’s employer. Shelton advised the committee that due to costs, she now wished to use the county health insurance plan. Thompson moved and Zietlow seconded to approve Shelton being allowed to switch to the county’s health insurance. Motion carried.
Thompson moved and Zietlow seconded to approve the Animal Control vouchers as presented. Motion carried.
VSO Ray Boeckman informed the committee that the solar power system continues to run and is resulting in a savings for electric costs. Maki requested that Boeckman provide a comparison from the previous year as to the cost of electricity since installation of the solar power system.
Boeckman informed the committee that he has been given approval to post the Assistant VSO position in December, with interviews to be conducted in February, 2011.
Thompson moved and Maki seconded to approve the Veteran’s Department vouchers as presented. Motion carried.
Boeckman informed the committee that his department has processed 122 claims so far this year and county veterans have received $744.502.00 as of November 2, 2010, in retroactive pay and benefits for claims that have been awarded by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Coroner Dokkestul presented his monthly report.
Ambulance/Emergency Government Report:
Brian Cody presented his monthly report and statistics. He reported that ambulance runs are up.
Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to approve the Ambulance/Emergency Government vouchers as presented. Motion carried
Other Matters for Discussion Only
Chief Deputy Kornbroke indicated that she has received drafts of proposed ordinances in other counties regarding the sale of K-2, or synthetic marijuana. She will present further information to the committee when she receives it from the State.
Chief Deputy Kornbroke informed the committee that the sheriff’s department has purchased a new snowmobile for approximately $9,500.00 which will be delivered in December.
Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to go into closed session, pursuant to Wis. Stat. 19.85(1)(f) for preliminary consideration of a personnel matter at 9:40 a.m. Motion carried. (Minutes of closed sessions are kept in a confidential file in the Sawyer County Clerk’s Office.)
