Public Safety Meeting – September 10, 2010 – 8:30 a.m.
Assembly Room - Sawyer County Courthouse
Members present: Fred Zietlow (Chair), Dale Thompson, Dean Pearson, Walt Jaeger
Others present: Sheriff Jim Meier, Lt. Kurt Barthel, Veterans Service Officer Ray Boeckman, Coroner Dave Dokkestul, Animal Control Officer Sherrie Shelton, Terrell Boettcher
Chairman Zietlow called the meeting to order at 8:50 a.m.
Motion by Pearson, seconded by Thompson, to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried.
Motion by Pearson, seconded by Zietlow, to approve the minutes of the August 12, 2010, meeting. Motion carried.
Sheriff Meier presented the monthly department report.
Discussion was held about creation of an ordinance to ban the sale and possession of synthetic marijuana (K-2) in Sawyer County. Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to request Corporation Counsel Thomas J. Duffy to draft an ordinance prohibiting the sale and possession of synthetic marijuana in Sawyer County. Motion carried.
Lt. Barthel briefly reviewed the annual jail inspection report. A copy of the report will be provided to all county board members for their information.
Pearson moved and Thompson seconded to approve out of county travel for the sheriff’s department as presented. Motion carried
Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to approve the sheriff’s department vouchers as presented. Motion carried.
Lt. Barthel presented the monthly jail report to the committee.
Animal Control Officer Shelton presented her monthly report.
Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to approve the Animal Control vouchers as presented. Motion carried.
Thompson moved and Jaeger seconded to approve the Veteran’s Department vouchers as presented. Motion carried.
Boeckman informed the committee that his department has processed 88 claims so far this year and county veterans have received $641,257.00 as of September 9, 2010, in retroactive pay for claims that have been awarded by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Boeckman informed the committee that his office will be participating in an open house/benefit information activity with LCO Vocational Rehabilitation at LCO on Friday, September 17, 2010.
Coroner Dokkestul presented his monthly report to the committee.
Thompson moved and Pearson seconded to approve the Coroner’s vouchers as presented. Motion carried.
Ambulance/Emergency Government Report:
Brian Cody was not present at the meeting, as he was attending a workshop in Duluth. Cody’s monthly report was distributed.
Thompson moved and Jaeger seconded to approve the Ambulance/Emergency Government vouchers as presented. Motion carried
Other Matters for Discussion:
Sheriff Meier gave an update on a recent grant proposal which was submitted regarding upgrade of radios and communication systems. Sheriff Meier informed the committee that representatives of his department and other departments involved had interviews regarding the grant and that Sawyer County is still being considered for receiving grant funds.
Thompson moved and Jaeger seconded to adjourn the meeting at 9:20 a.m. Motion carried.
