Public Safety Meeting – July 12, 2010 – 9:00 a.m.
Assembly Room - Sawyer County Courthouse

Members present:  Fred Zietlow, Jim Bassett, Ken Maki, Dean Pearson

Others present:  Warren Johnson, Sheriff Jim Meier, Chief Deputy Brigitte Kornbroke, Lt. Kurt Barthel, Veterans Service Officer Ray Boeckman, Human Resources Manager Carol Larson, Ambulance/Emergency Government Administrator Brian Cody, Terrell Boettcher

Zietlow called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

Motion by Bassett, seconded by Pearson, to approve the agenda as presented.  Motion carried.

Motion by Pearson, seconded by Zietlow, to approve the minutes of the June 11, 2010, meeting.  Motion carried.

Discussion was held about department mail delivery.  Pearson moved and Zietlow seconded to recommend leaving the mail to be picked up at the post office by departments.  Bassett and Maki voted no.  Zietlow and Pearson voted yes.  Motion failed.

Emergency planning in Sawyer County was discussed due to the recent incident at the Price County dam due to heavy rains.  Brian Cody informed the committee that a committee has been formed to discuss the Price County dam incident and any issues that arose.  Cody also informed the committee that there is an emergency operations plan in place throughout the county and an emergency action plan in place for each dam in Sawyer County.  Bassett thanked the sheriff’s department for their response at the Price County dam.

Sheriff’s Report:

Sheriff Meier informed the committee that the jail inspection was held recently, but he has not received a report on the inspection yet.  Sheriff Meier stated he hopes to have the inspection report prior to the August Public Safety meeting.

Sheriff Meier informed the committee that he expects the budget to be in the black this year, unless an unexpected incident would arise.  Sheriff Meier stated that there is a jury trial scheduled at the end of August which may incur additional costs to the sheriff’s department. 

Lt. Barthel presented the monthly jail report to the committee.  Inmate population and out of county housing were discussed.

The truancy deputy job description was discussed.  Some committee members advised that they had not had a chance to review the job description.  The matter was tabled until the August Public Safety meeting.

Bassett moved and Pearson seconded to approve out of county travel for the sheriff’s department as presented.  Motion carried.

Bassett moved and Zietlow seconded to approve the sheriff’s department vouchers as presented.  Motion carried. 

Animal Control:

Animal Control Officer Shelton was unable to attend the meeting.  Chief Deputy Kornbroke advised the committee that she had received a brief report from Animal Control Officer Shelton of her activities for the past month and informed the committee of the same.  Chief Deputy Kornbroke advised that Animal Control Officer Shelton would have her logs available at the August meeting.

Bassett moved and Zietlow seconded to approve the Animal Control vouchers as presented.  Motion carried.

Veterans Report:

Maki moved and Bassett seconded to approve out of county travel for Veterans Service Officer Ray Boeckman as presented.  Motion carried.

Boeckman informed the committee that Assistant CVSO Mike Petty is planning to retire in April of 2011.  Discussion was held about job posting and requirements. 

Coroner’s Report:

Coroner Dokkestul was not present at the meeting.

Ambulance/Emergency Government Report:

Brian Cody presented the monthly ambulance report.  Cody informed the committee that due to an ambulance which is to be traded in now needing maintenance work, they will be taking delivery of the new ambulance next week.

Carol Larson and Brian Cody presented information to the committee on the Experience Works program that provides job training experience for senior citizens.  Cody expressed that he would like to utilize a person from the Experience Works program to provide administrative support for the Ambulance/Emergency Government Department.  The Courthouse Union contract allows a work experience placement for a maximum of 30 weeks.  Cody and Larson informed the committee that the person placed is paid by the Experience Works program at no cost to Sawyer County.  Bassett moved and Pearson seconded to recommend approval to the Personnel Committee/County Board to participate in the Experience Works Program for administrative support in the Ambulance/Emergency Government Department.  Motion carried.

Bassett moved and Pearson seconded to approve out of county travel for Brian Cody as presented.  Motion carried

Pearson moved and Bassett seconded to approve the Ambulance/Emergency Government vouchers as presented.  Motion carried.

Other Matters for Discussion:

None.

Bassett moved and Zietlow seconded to adjourn the meeting at 10:20 a.m.  Motion carried.
