minutes of the meeting of the Economic Development and Planning Committee

others present: Town of Edgewater property owner Linda Zillmer, Scott Allen and Liz Metcalf (Sawyer County Development Corporation), Sally Schrader (Indianhead Community Action Agency), Sawyer County Clerk Kris Mayberry
Motion by Mizerka, 2nd by Maki, to approve the meeting agenda. Motion carried
Motion by Mizerka, 2nd by Johnson, to approve the March 5, 2010 meeting minutes. Motion carried.
The Committee reviewed information concerning the Village of Winter Board of Trustees request for a $4,400 contribution by Sawyer County from the Sawyer County Environmental Impact Fund towards the estimated $8,800 cost of improvements (new pavilion) to the Doc Smith Park located in the Village of Winter. Past requests by the Village of Winter for funding from the Sawyer County Environmental Impact Fund for park improvements were not successful. Motion by Maki, 2nd by Mizerka, to recommend Finance Committee and County Board approval of the request. Motion carried.
Indianhead Community Action Agency (ICAA) representative Sally Schrader provided a report on progress with the Community Development Block Grant housing rehabilitation project in Sawyer County. Ms. Schrader reported that Sawyer County Board Chair Hal Helwig signed the request for release of funds and certification to be returned to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and that a number of applicants for housing rehabilitation assistance had already contacted ICAA and its collaborating partners.
No representatives of the Northwest Regional Planning Commission were present. Motion by Maki, 2nd by Johnson, to request the Planning Commission to have a representative attend all meetings of the Economic Development and Planning Committee. Motion carried.
Sawyer County Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Scott Allen presented a report on the activities and plans of the Development Corporation, including assistance being provided to existing and prospective businesses and applying for federal revolving loan funds to assist businesses in the future.
No representatives of the Hayward Area Visitor and Convention Bureau were present.
There were no monthly expense vouchers.
The Committee discussed the proposal for Sawyer County to pursue the premier resort tax status.
Sawyer County Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Scott Allen reported that the Professional Musky Tournament Trail might consider holding their fishing event in the Hayward area if the area would provide $8,500 as a prize to winners of the event. The Committee determined to discuss this at the May meeting of the Committee.
The Committee discussed the Crappie fishing contest scheduled for the area for the fishing opening weekend.
